SAFER Council's mission is to assist workers and employers in the B.C. Forest Industry to improve accident prevention and create a healthy environment, on and off the job.
To reach this safety goal, SAFER has taken a leadership role in the development of safety training sessions for workers. New ideas are encouraged and reviewed by the SAFER council.
The council is funded through "The 1/2 Cent Fund" (employer contributions of 1/2 cent for every employee hour worked). SAFER is jointly managed by Steelworkers and the Coastal and Southern Interior forest industry.
It is pretty clear to someone just hearing about SAFER that safety is the chief concern of this organization. The name, SAFER, stands for Safety Advisory Foundation for Education and Research. Created through Master Collective Agreements (1988-91) for the Coast and Southern Interior, SAFER is jointly managed by the United Steelworkers and the Coastal and Southern Interior Forest Industry. Both groups enjoy equal representation. This includes a co-chair, four board members and three trustees. The council is funded through employer contributions of 1/2 cent for every employee hour worked.
